New Jersey to North Dakota: Workforce Fly-In Program Turns Interest into Economic Impact
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – When Charles Ganges boarded a plane from New Jersey to attend the Find the Good Life Fly-In event in Grand Forks last year, he didn’t know it would lead to a life-changing move. Now, just months later, he proudly calls North Dakota home, working in two positions and contributing to the growing economic and workforce vitality of the state.
“The Fly-In event was an unforgettable experience that gave me a true feel for Grand Forks and life in North Dakota, “said Ganges. Over just a few days, we explored the city, met with local employers, toured housing options, and experienced the incredible hospitality that makes North Dakota special. What really sets this state apart is the strong sense of community, and genuine warmth of the people.”
Ganges relocated in early October 2024, accepted a full-time position as an Operations Center Specialist at the University of North Dakota (UND) and supplements his schedule with a weekend role at Cirrus Aircraft. The Fly-In event gave him the opportunity to experience the community firsthand and connect with multiple employers — including UND, where he ultimately found the right fit.
He’s not the only success story from the Fly-In. The event hosted seven individuals who engaged with eight regional employers, resulting in more than 10 interviews. Two participants have already relocated to North Dakota, one bringing two additional school aged family members — adding up to four new North Dakotans and an estimated $50,000 in annual economic impact.
That economic return more than offsets the cost of the Fly-In event itself, which is a part of North Dakota’s "Find the Good Life" initiative aimed at recruiting skilled professionals to the state. To date, eighty-three individuals moved to 18 North Dakota communities with a $4.15 million economic impact, plus any impact from accompanying family through Find the Good Life.
“As we look to continue strengthening our workforce, Charles’ story is proof that this initiative works,” said Katie Ralston Howe, Director of the Workforce Division. “The Fly-In helped turn potential into permanent, adding talent to our communities and driving lasting impact for our economy.”
